Northwestern 42, Crown 20
The entire duration of
homecoming week led up to Saturday’s game versus the Crown Storm, and
the game was a battle of firsts. While Northwestern searched for their
first home win of the 2009 football season, Crown came hungry for their
first win ever at Reynolds Field. Both teams made a statement during
the first quarter with touchdown each.
But after the first
quarter, it was Northwestern that pushed their defense to prevent
scores and upped their offense to find the end zone as Rahnee Dennard
rushed for the Eagles’ third touchdown and pushed the score to 21-14.
From then on, the Storm had difficulty getting down the field to close
the gap.
Senior Dan Sunde scored another Eagle touchdown
right before halftime, and Tarter completed a nine-yard connection to
Crum near the end of the third quarter, giving Northwestern a
three-possession lead.
The Storm was able to dim the lead
to 20-35 with an eight yard pass to Drew from quarterback Adam Hayes,
but their extra point kick was wide right of the uprights.
At
half time, the Eagles made a massive adjustment, holding the Storm to
just 79 total offensive yards and one TD in the third quarter after
giving up 197 total yards and two TDs in the first two quarters. “As
the game gets longer, we get stronger,” Coach Talley commented.
The
win over Crown brought the Eagles to a 2-2 record. However, the team
continues to remember that its not all about wins and losses. As Coach
Talley reiterates, “Play the way you play in a way that worships Jesus
Christ.”
Ryan Long contributed 3 TDs and had 21 carries for
121 yards rushing, also adding one reception for 13 yards. In
addition, quarterback Zach Tarter went 14 for 16 and compiled 200 yards
and one TD.
The next game will kick off at noon on Reynold’s field on Saturday, Oct. 3 against Macalester.
