Allen and Favre top Vikings' roster in big win over Green Bay

Vikings and Packers fans alike waited in anticipation for Oct. 5 to roll around. Some would argue that the Minnesota-Green Bay matchup on Monday Night Football was the biggest NFL game in several years.

Although Vikings quarterback Brett Favre attempted to downplay the magnitude of the game, media continued to flock and boost hype for the matchup all week.

According to an online article, fans from 38 different states purchased tickets to see Favre take on his former team, the team that created the Favre Saga.

In a ritual new to this season, an online poll was taken of all 50 states as to which team would leave the Metrodome victorious. Forty-nine states chose Minnesota. The odd one out? Wisconsin, of course.

Seeming even more out of place on the field than the pink gloves and shoes being sported for breast cancer awareness was the purple number-four jersey.

Although Favre later said that Monday’s game was the most nervous he has ever been,  the veteran QB seemed to stay calm as he connected for three touchdown passes and 271 yards in a 30-23 victory for the Vikings.

Favre played with the confidence that comes from experience, and he avoided risky plays. The offensive line protected the pocket consistently, allowing Favre adequate time for making crunch-time decisions.

Along with Favre’s winning performance, the Vikings’ defensive line kept the Packers at bay.

Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers found himself on his back eight times as a result of sacks. Vikings’ defensive end Jared Allen tallied 4.5 sacks of his own.

In addition to sacking the young quarterback several times, Allen was able to cause a safety for Green Bay, granting an easy two points to the Vikings.

Allen excelled last season, and he has come back to play with Minnesota with even more intensity. Fans never seem to tire of seeing the Texas native re-enact the tying up of a rodeo calf after each sack. The tradition stems from Allen’s background in calf roping and steer riding.

Rodgers was simply unable to keep up with the pace of Monday’s game. Although he did display a few decent passes, some of the Packer’s receivers struggled to connect with the balls he threw.

Several of the Minnesota Vikings  who performed were worthy of the limelight on Monday night. Visanthe Shiancoe, Adrian Peterson, Sidney Rice and Bernard Berrian each put up a touchdown to aid in the win.

Although Green Bay held the advantage in total yards (424 to Minnesota’s 334), the Vikings had possession of the ball for a mere three minutes longer and still dominated in scoring.

After the game, Favre expressed that although he had never pictured himself in this situation, “it just felt right.”

Well, Vikings fans hope this feeling continues.

Monday’s win against Green Bay takes the Vikings to an undefeated 4-0 record. The other teams that are currently undefeated are Denver, Indianapolis, the New York Giants and New Orleans.
