NWC 4, Presentation 1 On a brisk Friday afternoon at Reynolds Field, the Northwestern men’s soccer team outworked and outplayed the Presentation Saints, winning 4-1. The Eagles jumped out to an early lead when freshman Sam Mann scored just 2:36 into the game off a pass from senior Jon Blatchley.
Sophomore Ben Fast added the second goal of the half for Northwestern from a free kick at 16:42. Down one was the closest Presentation would get during the match as senior Alex Reyes put the Eagles up two. NWC got its final goal at 71:41 when sophomore Michael Bliss headed in a Reyes shot.
Northwestern amassed 13 shots in the UMAC game to the Saints’ one. The Eagles latest win brought their conference record to 4-2-1. Despite booting 24 shots on Oct. 3 against Martin Luther College, the Eagles had to settle for a 0-0 tie. King earned a shutout in the game with one save. Reyes had seven shots for the Eagles, and freshman Jeremy Stiner had five. “We played an excellent game against Martin Luther, especially considering we had a game the day before,” said Reyes.
“Unfortunately, we were unable to finish our chances to come away with a win. But I’m proud of the way our team has been playing, and I feel we’re not gonna settle with a tie next time we face them.” Jeremy Stiner got things going at 14:50 in the first half after he received a pass from Reyes. Freshman Sam Mann beat the whistle with the game’s second goal, which came at 44:26. Mann got his second goal of the game at 83:28 in the second, putting the Eagles up three. King narrowly missed a shutout, as Martin Luther’s Jacob Duppong scored at 87:44. King, who recorded one save in the game, was pulled for freshman A.J. Olivero, who recorded one save of his own. Northwestern outshot the Vikings 17 to five in the UMAC victory. Senior Ben Haugen commented on the upcoming game against St. Scholastica: “We have grown a lot as a team. We had a really big win that has helped us in the standings. Right now, this weekend is huge because we always have a huge rivalry with St. Scholastica.” |
